BPSC 72nd CCE: What Happens After the Prelims?
A complete walkthrough of the post-preliminary journey: answer key objections, cutoff declaration, Mains descriptive exam pattern (GS-1, GS-2, Essay, Optional MCQ), Interview, and final merit allocation.
1. Post-Prelims Procedural Timeline
Clearing the Preliminary Examination is the first hurdle in the BPSC selection lifecycle. Because the Prelims is strictly a screening test, marks scored in Prelims are not added to your final ranking.
Understanding what lies ahead helps candidates transition immediately into Mains preparation without wasting the critical 60-day window following the Prelims exam.
2. Provisional Keys, Errata Objections & Results
Within 1 to 2 weeks of the Prelims, BPSC releases the Provisional Answer Key on its website. Candidates are given a 5-day window to submit objections with authenticated textbook proof.
An expert academic committee reviews all submissions, after which the Final Answer Key and the Category-Wise Cutoff List are published alongside the Roll Numbers of shortlisted Mains candidates (~10 times the total vacancies).
3. Mains Written Examination Architecture
The Mains examination comprises descriptive written papers and qualifying components:
| Paper Name | Duration & Nature | Max Marks | Merit Contribution |
|---|---|---|---|
| General Hindi | 3 Hours (Descriptive) | 100 Marks | Qualifying only (Minimum 30% required; marks not added to merit) |
| General Studies Paper 1 (GS-1) | 3 Hours (Descriptive) | 300 Marks | Modern Indian History & Bihar Culture, National/Intl Current Affairs, Statistical Analysis & Graphs |
| General Studies Paper 2 (GS-2) | 3 Hours (Descriptive) | 300 Marks | Indian Polity & Bihar, Indian Economy & Geography of Bihar, Science & Technology Applications |
| Essay Paper | 3 Hours (3 Sections) | 300 Marks | General philosophical/national themes + Section on Bihar-specific socio-cultural themes / folk proverbs |
| Optional Subject | 3 Hours (MCQ Format) | 100 Marks | Qualifying only (Subject chosen by candidate; evaluated on percentile/percentage threshold) |
4. The Personality Test (120 Marks)
Candidates who clear the Mains cutoff are summoned to the BPSC Headquarters on Bailey Road, Patna for a 120-mark Personality Test. The interview board evaluates your administrative judgment, emotional poise, knowledge of Bihar's socio-economic challenges, and leadership qualities.
5. Final Merit List & Cadre Allocation
The final merit list is computed out of 1,020 Marks (Mains 900 + Interview 120). Service allocation (BAS/SDM, BPS/DSP, etc.) is awarded based strictly on merit rank and candidate preference order.
